What Concert Band is

Running a concert band rehearsal means managing two things at once: the full score in the director’s hands, and the individual parts on every stand. A woodwind section drilling a rhythmically difficult passage needs to hear their transposed part at a tempo they can actually work with, not race through the full tempo until the passage is unlearnable. The director needs to isolate a section, set the tempo for drilling, and run the passage on repeat — and then bring it back to speed and run it again with the full band.

Concert Band is a rehearsal surface built for that workflow. The full score lives in the Musique notation engraver. The engraver transposing parts correctly — a Bb clarinet seeing its transposed reading key, a French horn seeing its own — is not a preference, it is a requirement for the tool to be useful in a real rehearsal. The part selector isolates the section being drilled so the players see their own part, not the full conductor’s score.

The sectional-rehearsal cluster is three controls: a loop range, a practice tempo, and a count-in. Set the loop to the passage the section needs to drill. Bring the tempo down to drilling speed. Count in. Run the passage. That cycle — repeated until the entrance is clean, then ratcheted back toward performance tempo — is what the surface is designed to support without friction.

Concert Band is in active development on the Musique suite. What is described on this page is the surface’s design and where it is being built — not a claim that everything is running today. The honest summary: the rehearsal room is being built, early access is how you get in first, and nothing here generates or composes music.

The rehearsal workflow — full score to a section part

The arc a director actually runs, from the full conductor’s score down to one student’s home practice: load the score, isolate the section that needs work, slow the passage to drilling speed, mark the trouble spot, and send it home as an assignment. The first three steps are the core surface in active development; the last two — marking and home practice — are early access, on the roadmap and honestly not in the surface today.

The director loads the piece into the Musique engraver. The full conductor’s score lives there in concert pitch, and every instrument’s part is derived from it in the correct transposed reading key. Nothing is generated or re-arranged — the surface reads the score the director already has and presents it.

Isolate the section In active development

The part selector narrows the engraver to one instrument family — the clarinets, the low brass, the flutes — so the players in the drill see their own transposed part while the director sees it against the surrounding harmony. Isolation is the first move of any section rehearsal, and it is the move a full-score view alone cannot make.

Slow the passage In active development

Set the loop range on the measures that need work and bring the tempo below the performance mark. A passage that falls apart at concert tempo is almost always learnable slower; the loop holds those bars on repeat so the section drills the entrance without counting back to the downbeat every time.

Marking a passage — a breath mark, a bowing, a ‘watch the release’ note pinned to a measure — is how a director turns a run-through into a specific fix a section can carry into the next rehearsal. The last step hands the marked passage to a student to work on before the next rehearsal: the isolated part, the loop, and the practice tempo, sent home as an assignment the student opens on their own. Home-practice assignment and the practice-tracking that would record whether it was done are early access — described here honestly as where the surface is going, not as something you can assign today.

The full conductor’s score

The full score in the Musique engraver shows every instrument on its own line in concert pitch, with the standard conductor layout. A director can see the full texture of the piece, follow the rehearsal from the conductor’s perspective, and isolate any section by switching the view. The conductor’s score is the source of truth for the parts.

Transposed reading parts

Each instrument family sees its part transposed to its reading key: Bb instruments transposed up a major second, Eb instruments up a minor third, French horns in F transposed up a fifth. The transposition is deterministic and computed from the concert-pitch score — a player opens their part and reads the notes they are actually responsible for, at the pitch they are used to reading.

Section isolation

The part selector narrows the view to a single instrument family — just the flutes, just the low brass, just the clarinets — for a section rehearsal. Players in the section see their part; the director sees the same part alongside the surrounding harmonic context. Isolation is the first step of a section drill.

Instrument families

The selector covers the standard wind band families: flute and piccolo, oboe and bassoon, the clarinet family (Bb, bass, contrabass), saxophones (alto, tenor, bari), the brass family (trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba), and percussion. Every family has its own transposition and clef, handled by the engraver.

Consistent with the written page

A part a player sees on screen is the same part they would see on the stand: same transposition, same engraving, same layout. The surface does not create a separate rendering for rehearsal — the Musique engraver is the single rendering engine, and the on-screen part and the printed part come from the same source.

Your music, not a generated arrangement

The score in the engraver is the music the director loaded. Concert Band does not generate a part, suggest a voicing, or re-arrange anything. It reads what the director loaded, transposes it correctly for each instrument, and presents it. There is no AI in the score rendering path.

Sectional rehearsal

Inside the drill: four steps, each a single control. Isolate the section, slow the tempo, count in, run the passage. No separate metronome, no manual bar navigation, no separate tab for the transposed part.

Isolate the section and set the loop

Select the instrument family for the section drill. Set the loop range to the passage that needs work -- the difficult entrance, the intonation problem in the middle of the phrase, the section that fell apart at the last run-through. The loop holds those measures on repeat without the director having to find the bar every time.

Set the practice tempo

Bring the tempo down to drilling speed. A rhythmically difficult passage that cannot be played cleanly at performance tempo can almost always be learned at a slower tempo -- the goal is accuracy at low speed before adding speed. The tempo slider is one control; set it once for the drill and adjust as the section improves.

Count in and run the passage

The count-in plays beats before the entry measure. The click is routed honestly through the Musique audio engine: the producesSound flag is false until SONUS is wired, so the count-in is shown and announced but never synthesized as a fake audible click. When the audio engine lands, the same flag flip brings it live without any other change to the rehearsal surface.

Repeat and ratchet up

The loop runs the passage at the set tempo, count-in to cadence, and returns to the top. The section repeats it until the entrance is clean, the director raises the tempo a notch, and they run it again. When the passage is clean at drilling speed and clean at a few steps above it, the director returns to performance tempo and runs the passage with the full band. That is the arc the surface is designed to support.

What the surface does, and how far along each piece is

Every capability below is labelled honestly. In active development means the piece is designed and being wired on the Musique suite — not available to use today. Honest-off means it is present in the surface but deliberately does not run yet. Early access means it is on the roadmap, not in the current build. Nothing here is a shipped, log-in-today product.

Who Concert Band is for

The band director runs the full ensemble and the section rehearsals inside it. You have a full score, a room of players who need to drill an entrance in their transposed key, and limited time. Concert Band puts the isolate-loop-tempo-count-in workflow into one surface so the section drill is the focus, not the setup — and the same score that drives the full-band read drives every isolated part.

The section leader — a student principal or an assistant director running a woodwind or brass sectional on their own — needs the section’s part, the loop, and the tempo without the full conductor’s score in front of them. The single-family view is built for exactly that: load the part, set the loop, run the drill, and report back what still needs work before the next full rehearsal.

The student practicing an exposed passage can use the section drill independently: pick the instrument, isolate the passage, set a practice tempo below the performance mark, and run it alone before the next rehearsal. The transposed part is what they see on screen, exactly as they would read it from the stand — not a concert-pitch score they have to transpose in their head.

Concert Band is built on the same Musique suite as the choral and general-music surfaces on the platform. A school that runs a choral program, a concert band, and a music-theory class through the platform has one rehearsal engine behind all of them. Concert Band is the instrumental-rehearsal face; it is not a separate product requiring a separate account.

Scores, practice data, and privacy

The score a director loads is the school’s music. Concert Band reads it to display and transpose it — that is all. The score is not sent to an outside AI service, not used to train a model, and not shared with or sold to anyone. There is no generative model in the path: the engraver renders what was loaded, in each instrument’s reading key, and nothing else.

When practice-tracking arrives — it is early access — any record of what a student practiced belongs to the school and the family. Student practice data is never sold and never handed to an advertiser or a data broker. The surface runs on private infrastructure, with no third-party ad network and no behavioural tracking on students, and any practice record is deletable by the school.

Concert Band is a rehearsal tool, not a photo or media product: it does not collect student photos and does no face matching of any kind. If a school runs the wider platform for its picture day and event media, the consent rules for that media live there; the rehearsal surface itself holds scores and, when it ships, practice records — both school-owned, both deletable, neither sold.
